Over the last 12 years, the name Horizon is recognized as the odds on favorite in winning the Santa Cruz 50 & 52 divisions in any of the down wind races on the west coast of the United States.
There are many variables in the consistent performance of Horizon, in my opinion, the largest factor is the performance optimization by Tim Kernan along with the boat’s rudder designed by Alan Andrew. In 2009 she underwent an extensive refit at Dennis Choate’s LB yard. At this time it was discovered that the Andrews designed “Lokomotion” was making a rudder design change with Team Horizon purchasing the replaced rudder. This rudder was the magic to Horizon consistency on the racecourse.
Horizon Race record: Transpac’s division wins (2009, 2011, 2013, 2017 & 2021) in 2021 Horizon set a new course record of 8 days 23 hours & 23 minutes. Which was held by Allure in 1987. Horizon’s Mexico race record has also been exceptional with podium finishes in all attempts along with a class win in the SDYC’s PV Race in 2010, an overall win in the Cabo 2009 race, along with an overall win in the PV 2014 race. She also has two overall wins in the Ensenada Race, and 2016 CORW. In 2009 the engine went through a top to bottom rebuild. The list goes on and on with the addition of a completely new B&G electronics package, TracVision satellite communication, and satellite phone communications. Horizon is the boat to beat in the Santa Cruz 50 & 52 division which attracts up to 12 boats in most offshore races.
We selected this division because we felt that this was the highest skill level of Corinthian participants. The idea of sailing submerged in water, eating dry food, and using a bucket as a head did not apply to us. Horizon met our use perfectly and we have always felt privileged to sail aboard her.
The SC 50 hull and deck are hand laminated of multiple layers of fiberglass mat and roving impregnated with polyester resin. Vacuum bagged balsa core provides stiffness and strength without unnecessary weight. The deck is cored with inserts in areas of high stress. The hull and deck are bonded with polyester adhesive and in Horizon this has also been glassed over both internally and externally for additional strength and stiffness. All deck hardware is through bolted with backing plates & many of the higher loaded systems having G-10 inserts through the core.
The keel for this SC-50+ is a solid lead casting bolted to the keel sump with 1” keel bolts. Faired and permanently covered in fiberglass, the keel is bonded to the hull for extra strength, stiffness and crunch-protection. Keel, upgraded rudder and bottom have been faired and long-boarded.
Interior cabinetry and bulkheads are bonded directly to the hull and there are no floating bulkheads and no liners. Woodwork is beautifully finished with natural Bruynzeel Teak plywood of the highest quality. We’ve recently painted the overhead in flat white and all interior varnish and paint has been redone. The interior is original but looks like new.
Nav-Tec rod rigging, Ballenger mast 2012 (triple spreader) and Sea Tec boom (2018). Running rigging was replaced in 2021. Nav-Tec backstay hydraulic with replaced PBO Backstay in 2021. The spinnaker halyards have an external bail style lock that can be released at the deck via the internal trip line. Two carbon reaching struts are also included.
The interior is original and has been very well maintained. There are 2 quarter berths aft, on that is enclosed, that can be made into double bunks. 2 bunks amidships. All bunks have lee cloths and custom canvas storage for personal gear. LED lights at all bunks along with fans. Fans are also found in the head and galley. The enclosed head offers standing headroom with a marine head and holding tank. There is ample storage throughout the interior.
Horizon’s “U” shaped galley is complete with a Force 10 stove, replaced in 2016, two burner propane stove and oven along with a 12 volt Alder/Barbour refrigeration unit replaced in 2016. There is a deep single sink with both fresh and salt water foot pumps and pressure salt or fresh water available as well. There is ample storage for provisions and galley gear (included) with 2 ice boxes in the raised floor amidships, Katadyn Watermaker/ PowerSurvivor 160E, 6 GPH watermaker is plumbed both to the sink for filling containers directly, with custom fresh water flushing system.
