Fair Wind is a classic beauty and a head-turner in an anchorage. The Sparkman & Stephens design has the wine-glass hull, with fin keel and skeg hung rudder, it was designed originally for racing. It was so strong and successful that it was put into production by Tartan and became a popular racer-cruiser. With the skeg hung rudder, and a new keel design (introduced in 1974) along with the tall rig, the balance is superb. The current owner has owned MANY boats and reports this is the best balanced, most sea-kindly boat he has sailed. The flat decks allow the crew to move around with ease, though this owner sails largely single-handed or with 1 crew member.
The interior is spacious, with lots of head room and loads of crew accommodation, a good sized galley and extensive storage. The wood is in fabulous condition (see photos).
Fair Wind is a simple boat with simple systems. The standing rigging was replaced in 2016 and the previous owner installed the Beta Marine 37HP engine (hours unknown) and the Autostream Feathering Prop; new mainsail in 2018 and new mainsail cover too. Decks have been recently painted.
The owner brought the boat back to the Chesapeake Bay from Rochester, New York in July 2022, so it has been recently used and recently hauled. Fair Wind is on the hard in Deltaville, VA.

The companionway leads down to the spacious, traditional interior with white hull liner and headliner trimmed with teak.
The galley is to port and Nav station to starboard, the seat leans up against a hanging/wet locker; the engine is below the stairs. On either side of the companionway stairs is access to the aft 'cabin' (no doors) which has single bunks port and starboard and a raised area above the engine/below the cockpit floor, amidships. This area could be used as a double berth, but also provides access to storage as well as to the back of the engine. There is storage below all surfaces.
From the salon/chart table area you step down into the salon, which has a table that folds up on the port forward bulkhead, L-shaped settee to port, with storage behind and a pilot berth above. Cushions are original and in good condition.
To starboard is a straight settee, with storage behind and pilot berth above. Forward of the settee is a set of drawers and a storage locker which abutts lockers and drawers that extend into the V-berth. To port is the head. The V-berth is spacious with storage port and starboard as well as beneath the bunk. A step amidships allows the occupants to climb up and a filler cushions converts it to a full V-berth.
