Malaika is a true classic within the classic style. This Sedan model is only one of six made. Very rare, and very unique, in excellent shape, even award winning in a classic boat show. Sitting at a public dock there is no way one could even tell this hull and superstructure is wood. Any future owner can also buy the boathouse it has been in for the last several years or if not it still comes with a full canvas winter cover. The sedan model layout is a 32 but only larger, and is the forerunner to the Europa design. 1973 was the transition year from wood to fibreglass, so this is one of the last wooden Grand Banks made. This boat is a true jewel and must be seen to believe. Great opportunity to get out on the water and enjoy our coast.
This vessel is a standard production model, designed by Ken Smith. Her hull is a modified V, semi-displacement, with a hard chine aft. Classic Grand Banks construction, Malaika has all the fine woodworking expected of GB, inside and out, teak trim all properly finished, decks all watertight, and with a sedan you will have a spacious aft deck, cockpit, side decks and fore decks are easy to get around. Ladder to the spacious flybridge with room for extra tables and chairs or just storage for paddle boards or kayaks. The current owner has done a marvellous job of keeping this boat looking brand new. Original fuel tanks have been replaced, engines serviced regularly, bilge is dry and clean, no wood boat smell.
Stepping inside puts you into a large and open salon, galley and lower helm station, all finished with tasteful teak trim, headliner, counter space and two settees for your guests. The lower helm is well set up, great all around visibility, electronics to cruise the coast with assurance.,a side door on the starboard side. Last is the stairs forward to the one stateroom with a double bed on the starboard side, and to the heads with shower and vanity sink.
Throughout the boat there are plenty of cupboard space and storage for your personal needs. All woodwork is classic Grand Banks teak finish, all appealing to the eye and done with the utmost professionalism.
Board through one of three gates, one on each side or one on the transom off the swim grid. you will Immediately notice the wide and safe decks, another Grand Banks trade mark, strong bulwarks and proper hand rails and handhold along the decks allows for safe movement outside while underway.
Large cockpit, your home on the water, enter the interior through a sliding door, once inside you see a large and spacious salon, lower helm, and galley, all bright and open with the help of windows all around, allows for all to enjoy the scenery, even on grey days
Twin settes allow for room to entertain your dock side guests. The starboard settee is also convertible into a double bed. Galley upgrades will also help in feeding all aboard. Plenty of storage in cupboards and drawers.
Modern updates such as LED lighting contributes to plenty of light, both mood lighting or reading lights, that does not draw excessive power.
On the port side of the interior, with great counter space, and lots of storage.
Upper and lower helm stations are both fitted with mechanical steering, operating through a chain and wire cable. Separate Morse throttle and shift controls for each engine, engine instrumentation including gauges for tachometer, temperatures, oil pressures, and battery voltage. The lower helm has hour gauges and ammeters for each engine.
The aft cockpit is very versatile, with room for several chairs and a table. This is where you will probably spend a vast majority of your time. The teak decks are all in good condition, the opening to the lazarette is large for easy access to storage and the rudder posts and steering system, water tank is also located here, and there is a hot and cold shower for rinsing off after boarding from the beach. Easy steps to the swim grid for swimming or boarding the tender.
The owner has made a special way to carry his Walker Bay sailing tender: It sits on the swim grid and is pulled up by the bow to stand horizontal, and attaches to the boat with some special pieces of wood. Very unique to this boat. Both side decks leading forward are wide and protected by high bulwarks and hand rails, which lead you all the way forward. The foredeck is also in good condition, the windlass with the anchoring system is easy to deploy and retrieve.
For a wooden boat this model shows no signs of any deterioration, in fact, she won a best in show at a wooden boat festival. If you like wood or have always wanted a wooden boat than this is what you need. On top of that you are getting a Grand Banks, one of the finest builders of wooden boats ever. A very large percentage of the wooden boats they built are still around and been enjoyed by their owners.
The boat is currently in a private boat house in Lynnwood Marina in North Vancouver, this house is also available to buy, and moorage would be transferable. The owner would sell each separately but reality is it should go wit the boat, where it really belongs for winter protection.
