The SOMES SOUND 26 is built on a conventional, molded fiberglass hull which is supplied by Oldport Marine in Rhode Island. The hull design embodies an easily driven semi-displacement, which is relatively light and very maneuverable. It is in keeping with the traditional lines and function of our Maine lobster boats. A possible engine selection is a Yanmar 6YA-STE 230hp marine diesel. The interior construction consists primarily of wood. Beams are Oregon fir covered by marine plywood and a traditional teak deck. The cockpit sole has fir floor timbers, covered by marine plywood and subsequently a teak platform. All the joinery work, engine hatch, console, coamings, seats, lockers, etc. are varnished teak. The console houses the steering control, engine controls, compass, mechanical connections and the electronic equipment. The electrical panel is also installed in the console. The engine box top has fiddles around the edges and is fitted with a cushion. It is insulated for sound. All hardware is bronze and there is an oak sampson post with a bronze cap with a star. A fold down dodger covers the forward seats and has a privacy curtain for a head mounted under the forward seating. This boat has also been built with a house top - a one-off project.
