The Design

The owner of this trimaran selected Antrim Associates in California to provide him a cruising trimaran design at 40'.  The design was based around a 40' racing trimaran and modified to suit. 

A graduate of Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, Jim Antrim founded Antrim Associates in 1979 after apprenticing with leading naval architects Dick Carter, Britton Chance and Gary Mull. His design portfolio is one of the most diverse in the industry, and includes record-breaking custom multihull and monohull sailboats, popular production boats, wing-sail assisted motor-catamarans, and recently, a solar-powered unmanned electric craft.

Always keeping an eye toward efficient innovation, Jim's expertise in composite engineering yields high-performing and weight-effective structures. Jim has developed several computer programs used in laminate engineering analysis, as well as performance analysis and prediction. His services are often sought after by other leading naval architecture firms.

His love for the sport of sailing ensures thoughtful, fun and leading edge designs.

Construction

Composite sandwich construction with kevlar and carbon fiber reinforcements in selected areas. The main hull features an above water chine, which has proven very effective at shedding water. The amas are carbon inside and kevlar outside, they feature high reserve buoyancy and well-rounded decks to for quick water shedding.

Mast & Rigging

Fully battened main with 18m rotating MARSTROM carbon fibre wing mast. Self-tacking jib on detachable inner forestay. Roller furling genoa and asymmetrical spinnaker.  Carbon boom.

Deck Layout

Rigid dodger with extendable soft-top provides full protection from the elements. All sail, mast and board controls are lead aft for ease of handling.  Trampoline netting between amas and main hull provides complete comfort and safety. Fixed rudder on JP3 bearings, the rudder is 1.5m below waterline offering excellent performance.

 

Accommodation

The hull was designed for full standing headroom and the interior does have a spacious feel.  Fully aft is a good double cabin.  By the companionway to starboard is a wet seat and wet locker.  The sea going galley has all any galley needs, good stowage, a gas stove, fresh and salt water.  Opposite, the nav station has a heavily insulated fridge built in.  Full forward the cabin is also generous, including storage bins and hanging locker, and the adjacent bathroom has a good and secure shower stall.

The fitout shows quality throughout, drawers and cupboard doors exhibit high quality fit and finish, the headlining is a foam backed vinyl and in excellent condition today.
