DALIA is a fantastic example of the modern, stylish, adaptable and highly specified sports cruiser style of motor boat, which is very popular today and combined with her great specification, many updates and relatively low hours represents a substantial saving over a comparable new build today.
The Marquis 420 SC comes with some great features originating from her combination of US Builders and European Designers. The Italian Designers being Nuvolari Lenard are renowned as being superyacht designers who work with the likes of the renowned brands such as Palmer Johnson and Oceano and their attention to design can clearly be seen, Marquis Yachts are the only production builder who they work with.
The features for this fabulous boat include; the aft seating area which can be adjusted electrically to extend out over the bathing platform to increase the cockpit area or be reduced to increase the bathing platform area as required. The electrically operated dining/coffee table in the saloon raises or lowers as required and when raised to be used for dining, the pedestal tilts the table towards the seats but when being used as a coffee table, it tilts away from the seats to create more space. Of course, the electrically operated panoramic roof over the helm and saloon area means that no matter what the weather, the boat can adapt to ensure it is perfectly suited to the conditions making for a boat ideal no matter what the weather or time of year.
The builders report a maximum speed of around 34 knots (subject to conditions and fuel loads etc) and so a comfortable cruise should be in the mid/high 20’s.
The (Marquis) 420 has a European heritage because it is designed by the rising stars of the yacht design world, Nuvolari and Lenard from Italy. They are now responsible for all the Marquis range and with their design skills, I should not have worried. Parked at the quay by the famous Monaco Yacht Club, the 420 was attracting many admiring glances, and it could quite happily mix socially with the serried ranks of Rivas nearby.
On the outside, the 420 is very seductive with its European curves. I love the shape and style, which is distinct but supremely attractive. You can almost hear the siren call of this boat, and those Italians have done a great job in creating something that is both stunningly beautiful, yet individual and practical. The flowing lines were enhanced by the metallic, granite-gray of the hull, with the rising deck line towards the stern embracing the lower saloon windows in a unique way. Above, the deckhouse presents another seductive swoop that has been developed by the double curvature glass of the sunroof. The curves run aft, with a hint of aggression to terminate in mini-fins.
Below, the transom has the same sharp finish, curving outwards in a distinctive line to a sharp point. The balance of the design is supreme and you then wonder if this exterior design can be matched by the interior.
There is a more American flavor on the interior, with cream and chocolate panelling matched to black and maroon trim. The fashionable Zebrano wood of the furniture adds a touch of texture in the neat and practical saloon, where the dark wenge wood deck is on the same level as the teak of the cockpit, but with a deep sill between. Marquis have done a great job of the rear saloon doors, with a hinged opening door to port. The remainder of the glass screen can be concertinaed back to open up the whole area, making saloon and cockpit a common playground. To create even more space, the transom settee can be moved back in port under electric power…
…A great feature is the large sun roof that opens up the saloon to the blue skies above. Now you have the joys of open air cruising but the deck levels are not quite right, because even standing at the helm there is no view over the deep top of the windscreen frame. The helm itself is neat and tidy with none of the clutter found on many layouts…
…Down below there is no feeling of being crowded and once again, inspired design comes into play. A two-berth cabin and the master double forward share a common bathroom, a sensible arrangement that does not make the accommodation feel crowded. Corner windows let into the edge of the coach roof give good natural light in the master cabin whilst the twin cabin and the bathroom have their own skylights.
The 420 manages to combine sexy good looks outside with practical features inside that make this a safe and sensible boat. The side decks have handrails in the right places to allow safe passage forward and the teak swim platform neatly fits into the overall length of the hull to enhance the appearance. Yet, it is still wide enough for stowing a jet ski.
The version tested was fitted with the top-of-the-range IPS 600 units, in which the drives are coupled to a pair of 435-horsepower Volvo diesels. The joy of IPS for me is when the drives are combined in the joystick control, which allows you to position this boat to within inches of a point, and to hold it there. In theory, you could do away with mooring ropes and anchors and just let the IPS hold the boat in the assigned position. With IPS you can maneuver like a pro and without too much thinking. And to make things even easier, on the 420 there is a second joystick fitted in the cockpit for stern docking. Combine this joystick with Volvo’s automatic interceptor control system for use at sea and half the work of driving this boat is done for you…
We ran the Marquis along the coast from Monte Carlo to Cannes for the sea trial, the classic cruising route that takes in some of the most exciting social centers along this coast. Villefranche with its attendant cruise liners, Beaulieu sur Mer and Antibes, where many superyachts find a temporary anchorage, Nice with its airport built out into the sea and just before arrival at Cannes, the Eden Roc Hotel at Cap d’Antibes, home to many of the rich and famous. Cannes came up all too soon at the end of a pleasant cruise, with the 420 running at a leisurely 28 knots…
…The hull has a moderate vee, combined with a relatively full bow. These features make it more sensitive to waves but the ride was very acceptable from a comfort point of view, and the generous beam ensured good stability. The speed topped out at 33 knots, although as the boat had just been refuelled it was on the heavy side. But the speed is on par with most sports cruisers these days, and you can cruise all day in the high twenties.
I fell in love with the 420 mainly for its sexy style, which matches the best on the market today. But I also loved it for its practical comfort and features – the boat is solidly built, feels good and it works well. This European-designed and American-built sports cruiser equals or exceeds most of its competitors.
