DOT CALM is a beautifully cared for Monk 36 new to the market. Owners are buying a larger boat. The Monk 36 is the perfect LOOP boat with incredible storage that rivals much larger vessels. The aft, owners stateroom is the reason this boat is so popular. Full walk around Queen berth with eight linear feet of hanging lockers to port and nine linear feet of cabinets, drawers and counter space to starboard making this stateroom a real retreat.
Monk Trawlers were built in Taiwan to start with but have been built in Nova Scotia since 1992. The Monk 36 has a solid fiberglass hull with a cored superstructure. This single screw trawler is a fuel-efficient long-range yacht suitable for the Great Loop and ocean voyaging at around 600 miles. In fact, this Monk 36 has completed the Loop once already and is uniquely laid out with substantial storage for long distance cruising.
The Monk 36 was first built in Taiwan in 1982, and then in Nova Scotia beginning in 1992. The model was in production until 2007, with more than 250 hulls delivered to owners. Dot Calm’s haul was the 188th built out of 250. Monk Trawlers are known for beautiful teak interiors with great storage. Built in Nova Scotia, Monk's name is synonymous with quality, comfort, and fuel efficiency. This vessel’s single Cummins 220-hp diesel has proved reliable and economical. The 18,000-pound boat cruises at about 1,600 to 1,800 rpm on its semi displacement hull, doing about 8 knots. That’s a fuel burn of less than 3 gallons an hour.
The designer, Ed Monk Jr., was the son of Ed Monk Sr., himself a naval architect and shipwright of note. Father and son worked together for many years on recreational and commercial craft. Monk Jr. established a reputation for designing rugged, dependable boats.
As a veteran Pacific Northwest delivery captain put it: “Ed Monk Jr. designs boats that seem to flow easily through the water. When it comes to performance and seakeeping, his designs are my gold standard.”
Dot Calm’s 13' beam with wide sidewalks provide a stable platform. High bow free board and flare allow for a dry comfortable ride in rough waters. 2 separate staterooms each with private head and storage. The Galley provides lots of natural light.
The Powerboat Guide touts the well-respected Monk 36 as a “graceful aft-cabin trawler” offering a mix of “simplicity, comfort and seaworthiness.” The bow is tall, and there’s plenty of freeboard from stem to stern. There’s a flybridge helm station (in addition to a lower helm in the saloon) that gives good sightlines around the boat. Wide side decks and rails all around are a plus for safety. Dot Calm includes a davit system for easy storage and launching of the dinghy which is a 9.6 dinghy with a hard aluminum hull and a Mercury 3.5 gas engine.
The aft cabin is the master stateroom, with its queen-sized berth offset to starboard and plenty of walk around space. This cabin is the reason so many cruisers choose the Monk 36. There is a large hanging locker to port and drawers and storage lockers on the starboard side. The adjacent head includes a separate shower. The second stateroom is forward, with a large V-berth and adjacent enclosed head compartment.
The main saloon has a port settee and high-low table that converts to a double berth. Just aft is the L-shaped galley. Equipment includes a full-size refrigerator/freezer, a three-burner stove/oven and a double stainless-steel sink.
This exceptionally clean 36 Monk has completed the loop and is ready to go again.
Classic aft cabin layout, guest cabin forward, two heads, flybridge and walk around deck: an extremely dry boat, thanks to high freeboard forward and flared bow with molded in spray rails. Forward cabin has V-berth, in-suite head, drawers, lockers and hanging closet.
The salon is finished in teak with teak and holly sole, two sliding side doors and large windows all around. Aft, the L- shaped galley is equipped with a Norcold refrigerator/freezer, two burner Princess propane stove, double stainless-steel sink, Magic Chef Microwave, and Insignia 19” TV, wired to a digital TV antenna. All kitchen utensils, including plates, silverware and glasses are included.
The aft cabin has a centerline Full sized bed with plenty of space to walk around both sides. On the port side there are nine feet of hanging lockers and a bank of five drawers. On the starboard side, there are eight feet of drawers and storage lockers with a large countertop. In-suite head with large shower stall. The aft cabin includes a recently added 42-inch Samsung flat screen smart TV which is wired to the KVG satellite system.
Upper and lower helms are both equipped with:
