The Island Packet 38 manufactured between '87 and '92 was Packet's first large boat with 2 heads. She is well built with a solid glass hull, synthetic deck coring, and a high aspect cutter rig, She is spacious, light and airy with elbow room and lots of storage. The 38 is what a cruising boat should be and she did not sacrifice performance to look pretty at anchor. In Today's Market, the 38 is a tremendous value for cruising, gunkholing or as a liveaboard. Starting at the bow is the forward cabin's head with separate shower area, teak shower seat, large vanity with stainless sink, an unbreakable mirror, formica counter top & plenty of storage. The Head is well ventilated with two opening ports with an overhead hatch.
Moving aft is the private forward cabin with a large pullman double berth on port side with full length teak shelf outboard, 4 large drawers & additional storage lockers under berth plus a nightstand. Across on port is a cedar lined hanging locker with shelf and a bureau with shelf over. Three opening ports and an overhead hatch provide great ventilation.
Next aft is the main saloon with L-shaped convertible settee/berth to starboard and a single settee berth to port. Teak cabinets and book shelves line both hull sides. There are large storage areas behind and under each settee as well and a cedar lined hanging locker with a shelf over. A clever drop leaf table folds and stores against the bulkhead when not used giving the saloon a very spacious feel. Large overhead hatch and numerous opening ports ventilate this area.
The nav station follows aft on starboard with a large table with tray storage under. The Electrical AC/DC Panel with generous nav/electronics cabinet is within easy reach.
On port across from the nav station is the aft/day head with shower & teak seat. Also featured: a large vanity with stainless steel sink unbreakable mirror, Formica counter tops with teak trim & storage cabinets. It is well ventilated with an overhead hatch and opening port. The door is conveniently located near the companionway for easy cockpit and cabin entry plus an additional door for private access from the aft cabin.
Continuing aft from Main salon to starboard is the galley which has a large wrap-around design with Formica surfaces and teak sea rails on all edges. Top loading refrigerator/freezer, three burner LPG stove & oven. There is a teak stove cover that serves as a cutting board. The counter has a large double stainless steel sink, pull out sprayer and a mechanical cold water faucet, large dry-storage bin, trash bin, papertowel holder, towel rack & well designed storage areas above and below countertops with dinner wear storage.
Furthest aft is the aft cabin with doors to both the main cabin and a private entry to the aft/day head. The large double berth is couple friendly with full length teak shelf outboard. Lockers under the berth as well as a generous cedar lined hanging locker with shelf over, provides lots of storage. With two opening ports and an overhead hatch, the aft cabin is also well ventilated.
The Island Packet 38 has a 12Volt and 2 - 120Volt Shorepower Systems. The second 120Volt System is dedicated to the Heat Pump
"Chautauqua" has a high-aspect, mast head, single spreader cutter rig.
Island Packet 38s have a solid glass hull with integral full-foil Keel and Bow Sprit. She has a cutaway forefoot and spade rudder and that combination allow for good tracking and great maneuverability. Their synthetically cored deck does not rot and there is less tendency for voids and delamination than boats with balsa or plywood coring.
