COME SEE THIS MASTERPIECE AT THIS YEAR'S ANNAPOLIS SAILBOAT SHOW.
The Bristol Channel Cutter is certainly among our favorite blue water boats for many reasons. The BCC built by Sam L. Morse is a fiberglass pilot cutter based on the beautiful wooden cutters that Lyle Hess designed for Lin and Larry Pardey. Of course Lyle copied the real pilot cutters of the Bristol Channel and the south coast of England. We saw them in Cornwall and they make your heart skip a beat. Lin and Larry Pardey have made these boats somewhat famous. They have rounded every Southern cape and crossed every ocean in their wooden cutters Serifyn and Talisen. There are so many sailors who are in love with a very few channel cutters.
We love the Bristol Channel Cutter. We've sailed so many of them, in virtually every weather condition. When we delivered "Surprise" hull number 103 up to the Northeast, we had a great opportunity to fly the spinnaker for some 250 miles reaching speeds of 8.25 knots. Surprise remained as solid as a rock, safe, comfortable, has an incredible sea motion, and a feeling that is hard to describe. We've delivered BCCs from Florida to Annapolis, from New Port to Virginia. From Annapolis to Maine. And so many places. Bernie just did a 150 mile day with Indigo, and made record breaking passage time with SusieQ. Other owners have reported making 150 days one after the other in both the Atlantic and Pacific. We never hesitate to sail a BCC anywhere.
I really cannot say enough about how easy it is to sail a Bristol Channel Cutter! A small woman can easily do everything on this boat. With tiller steering you have hands free to manage the sails and everything is human sized. Her current owner single hands Pinocchio easily and with the new head sail furlers he reports it is way too easy to furl the jib! I love it. You will love it too.
The Bristol Channel Cutter was famously built by the Sam L. Morse Company in Costa Mesa, CA. Without any doubt, this is one of the finest yachts ever built and Sam was in continuous production for over 35 years. The factory recently closed its doors and sold the mold to Channel Cutter Yachts in Port Townsend WA. I guess it became too difficult and expensive to spend over 18 months and well over 300K for the world’s best 28 foot boat. However, there have been two BCCs built for about 350K in Port Townsend. So you can still have one built for a handsome sum. That makes this vessel even more precious.
Pinocchio is the real thing. She was laid up in 1990 as hull #93 and is a sistership to my personal “Aloha” #95. She was completely finished to Sam L. Morse standards. She has had loving owners who have maintained her to a level of style and grace that the BCC is meant to have. Her teak and mahogany gleam with ten coats of new varnish and her bronze ports with a beautiful patina or salty and real. The interior is all refinished by a special owner a few years back and the new cushions and upholstery have kept her up to date. Talk about pride of ownership!
Pinocchio is just about as good as it gets if you are looking for a beautiful lightly used Bristol Channel Cutter. In about 2007 she was completely restored to original loveliness with new everything! Her current owner had her surveyed a couple years ago and fixed everything that was itemized and of course maintained her to the highest standards and improved her by replacing anything that needed attention. Here is the latest list of highlights.
Pinocchio is going to be at Brokerage Cove at the Annapolis Boat Show! This is your chance to see a most Beautiful Bristol Channel Cutter! Not since 2005 has there been a BCC on display. We are certainly proud to have her in the show. Come see!

A Bristol Channel Cutter is a work of art and is the most pleasing and functional layout you will ever find on a 28 foot boat. Everything is real, from the teak interior to the bronze opening ports. It's the quality of construction and the style and grace of every detail that makes the Lyle Hess-designed Bristol Channel Cutter stand out from the rest. As you enter the companionway the large workable galley is to port, the chart table to starboard, and an ideally sized salon forward. The foot well in the starboard berth is first class for stowage and for acting as base and safety bar for the cozy cabin heater. The pilot berth to port is a perfect sea berth. Cabin sole is hand-rubbed teak. The interior is varnished teak set off by the beautiful cream molded fiberglass bulkheads. She is light and airy with her six opening ports and two large hatches. She is gorgeous.
Galley & Plumbing
The World's Ten Best Sailboats ranks the BCC as number one and gives gracious accolades to the galley. This BCC has the the largest and most functional galley that exists. You can stow enough provisions for months on end. You can cook underway is safety and comfort. I love telling people how the BCC has a galley that is still my favorite for cooking underway. It just works. But no one did a lot of cooking on Lightfoot as the stove has never been used!
Electronics & Navigation
Beautiful new nav station with flush mounted instruments including SSB, VHF, Stereo, Link20. Nice Garmin GPS Chart plotter on swing our arm for viewing in the cockpit.
Systems: Mechanical & Electrical Systems
Start with the diesel engine. Pinocchio has a new Yanmar 3YM30, 29hp installed in March 2006! That's a bonus. Tiller steering with beautiful laminated tiller! On a BCC it is so fun and easy to maintain it. You’ll have fun with it.
Rig and Sails Inventory
The Bristol Channel Cutter is designed to be singlehanded anywhere. The rigging is overbuilt in every respect from the double spreader rig with upsized rigging, to the powerful bronze Barient winches, all rebuilt. The sail plan is divided in a true offshore cutter rig with an entire suite of NEW tanbark sails and new Profurl system on both headsails. All of the sails are small enough to be easily handled by one small person, like me. Don't be fooled! the total sail area of almost 600 sq ft gives you driving performance in all conditions. Bernie raced six boats up the Delaware (all bigger boats) and arrived in second place. There’s plenty of sail area for light air and you can reef her for any and all conditions to keep sailing fast. With both the jib and staysail on furlers it is even easier than it used to be.
Hull, Deck & Ground Tackle
A BCC is notoriously overbuilt in every way. Lightfoot has a new barrier coat in 2006 and the topsides shine and the deck is just about perfect. The hull is built without regard to cost by people who care about your safety as they care about their own. Glasswork is done by the same folks that built all the Westsails, Crystaliner, who have over 25 years of experience in building world cruising fiberglass sailing vessels.
