THE WHITBY 42’ IN BOB PERRY’S WORDS:
Whitby 42 ~ From my recollection the Whitby 42 came out in 1972. Center cockpits were not new at that time. Many custom boats had been built with center cockpits. But I’m pretty sure it was the Whitby 42 that introduced, mainstream center cockpit configuration to the world of production boat builders.
Ted designed the 42 when he was at the peak of his popularity and he was producing some very good boats. Ted and I are friends and I have been a fan of his work for years. I almost went to work for him. The 42 has aged well and for me it will always represent an important milestone in US production boat building”.

This WHITBY 42’, Hull #219 and built in the Brewer Yard, Ft. Myers, Florida is one of the most sturdy, comfortable and affordable yachts in a ketch rig, for anyone contemplating serious cruising and the live aboard lifestyle.
She is one of Ted Brewer’s most popular designs and has not only stood the test of time, it is also a benchmark of sorts, for the many center cockpit cruisers that followed in it’s wake.
With a 13’ beam, you will find plenty of interior space amidships with a roomy aft cabin….clearly one of the Whitby’s best features, along with the relatively shallow 5-foot draft, gives “VOYAGER II” a boat load of enduring popularity with cruisers. The cockpit is not only comfortable, but with the stout bridgedeck, it is most seaworthy and additionally, with access to either cabin from the cockpit, the Whitby 42’ is a favorite of knowledgeable sailors who cruise the oceans of the world.
"Spacious and sturdy, this cruiser is no slouch when it comes to sailing performance". "Classic Plastic" from Cruising Worlds - May 1998 issue.
There is terrific ventilation and natural light to the engine room, with the port side cockpit locker which opens directly to this spacious engine room. Side decks are wide and easy to navigate the interior is a sailors delight …comfortable, large storage areas and beautiful teak joinery… all in all, “VOYAGER II” is an EXCELLENT VALUE if you’re looking for a capable, offshore cruising yacht!!!
Headroom is 6’6” or better, throughout the boat and storage capacity can only be noted as “incredible”. Beautiful teak joinery throughout, and the cabin sole is teak and holly plank.
VOYAGER II sleeps up to seven people in accommodations with the forward cabin, main salon and large private owners cabin. The unique aft cabin design with separate cockpit entrance and private owners head and shower is a signature of the WHITBY 42. There is extensive storage in the form of shelves, hanging lockers and drawers throughout and she features private accommodations for two couples in separate cabins, plus settee berths in the main cabin.
In the main cabin, which can be accessed by “walk-through” from the owners private cabin, or by the cockpit companionway, immediately to port of the companionway, you will find the classic “wrap around” “U” shape configured, offshore safe galley, that will delight the gourmet, whether at sea or dockside, drawers, double deep Stainless steel sinks, cutting board, extensive louvered lockers, large dry storage bin, built in microwave, custom built spice rack, wine glass rack, pot and pan dry storage, large dry food cupboard, fully gimbaled stove and generous counter space, and even a garbage bin, a feature that the seasoned cruiser really appreciates!
The galley is a cooks dream, with a good sized storage cabinet, large opening hatch for light and ventilation overhead, two ports over the stove area for added light and ventilation.
Directly across from the galley, to starboard, is a proper offshore, forward facing navigation station and large desk chart table, which would house plenty of charts inside and tremendous room for an exceptional compliment of navigation and electronic equipment for easy use while navigating.
The large Nav table/desk has a generous storage locker under the desk top and room for the additional electronic navigation and communication equipment outboard. The nav seat has a large storage compartment underneath, a handy place for emergency tools and equipment. Next aft and proceeding from the salon through the walk-through on the starboard side, outboard is a workbench with additional chart stowage under, bookcase and electrical panel above. It also provides access to the walk in engine room that is underneath the cockpit sole by way of inboard double access doors to the engine room.
The master stateroom is all the way aft and has large twin berths port and starboard or by use of the filler piece, one large queen berth athwartship, double hanging lockers, and storage space, and ample drawers, along with an enclosed head with sink and shower head. This type of athwartship bunk is designed for sleeping on either tack and makes for a good sea berth and those seasoned offshore sailors will tell any novice sailor that the best sleeping is in the aft cabin. To port there is a second companionway from this stateroom up to the cockpit. Under the ladder there is room for storage for companionway slides and screens. 17 opening ports and 3 hatches provide tremendous ventilation and light.
Amidships is the main salon which features a beautiful L-shaped settee with dining table (table folds up against bulkhead when not in use), and drawers below. Settee slides out to make a double berth. Opposite to starboard is a bench settee which makes into a double berth, with storage outboard, drawers and wine rack with fold out cocktail table.
Proceeding forward, the guest head/shower is to port, accessible from either the salon or directly from the guest stateroom. Opposite, is a storage locker and a hanging locker. The guest stateroom has large V-berth with filler piece, and drawers under and storage above port and starboard. There is an overhead hatch as well as opening ports.
There are 17 opening ports, with screens and 2 opening deck hatches, plus the companionway hatch which provides a tremendous amount of light and superior cross ventilation. There are also 4 S/S dorade vents, and a ventilator in each head. Below deck ventilation far surpasses the standards in the industry.

Our Whitby 42, “VOYAGER II” was initially purchased in 1982 and sailed until 2005 by the original owner throughout the east coast and Caribbean, then sold to us. We put VOYAGER II on the hard for 3 years and went through all of the systems repairing and replacing as needed.
The bottom was sandblasted, epoxied and a barrier coat was applied in 2006.
Extensive work was done on the interior woodwork, sanding all wood down to bare wood and applying several coats of varnish, installation of radar, autopilot, rebuild windlass, strip all exterior teak, holding tank macerator pump-out, cockpit instruments.
The main engine was checked, all hoses and heat exchangers replaced and new mounts installed as well as a new 12 volt oil transfer system in 2007.
Both masts were removed, all rigging checked and replaced where necessary. VOYAGER II was relaunched June, 2009 and we cruised New England and the Chesapeake until the Spring of 2014, when we sailed to Jacksonville, Fl. We have sailed her in Florida both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts
