Special boat - Custom Valiant 40!

S/V Voila is a rare, custom upgraded, Uniflite Valiant 40, with arguably the best sailing rig in the fleet.  Owned by an experienced sailor and USCG Licensed Chief Engineer, most major upgrades are nicely completed.   Sometimes life gets in the way, plans change, and someone will get a special boat.  Just check out these smart decisions!

First it’s a Valiant 40, THE well respected Perry design, many 40’ cruising boats are compared with. Most Valiant 40s are still comfortably cruising around the world.  Uniflite Valiants are well known for their fire-retardant resin, the source of the “cosmetic” blisters that have never been associated with any sort of catastrophic failure.   John Kretschmer often has said that the blister boat V40s are THE best deal in blue water cruising boats.

Hull Upgrade: The extremely sound bottom was pealed, re-glassed with Vinyl-ester/Bi-axial 24oz stitched mat. Faired and bottom painted in 2015.  All of the Thru-hulls have been renewed/maintained too. The unattractive high thru-hulls were removed and properly plugged and relocated aft at the boot stripe (much more attractive!). The Hull was professionally spray painted in 2016.

Custom Rig Upgrade:  Greg, the owner started at the knees, re-glassing and strengthen the now stout supports for the rig. Then he rebuilt the chainplates, adding additional support for the second spreader rig. Port Townsend Rigging fabricated the custom, double-spreader, tapered aluminum mast with internal halyards.  The mast step was engineered, and even the spreaders passing through the mast were fitted with a UHMW insert to prevent halyard chaffing. A large crane at the top provides ample space for the tricolor, antennas and instruments, and keeps the spinnaker blocks clear. Tracks on the mast provide storage and control for the spinnaker pole and storm trysail. there are nice steps to mast top, on the easy-to-see black mast.

Boom Upgrade:  The Selden boom is 2 feet shorter than most Valiant 40s, clears the cockpit better, creating a high aspect main sail, that’s easier to trim.  The extra long hard Selden Vang makes reefing easier and reduces flogging damage to the main sail. All trim controls are in the cockpit, under the hard dodger.  Nice working traveler, with Spinlock Cam Cleats too.

Custom Bowsprit:  The bowsprit is a work of art and utility.  Unlike the factory Valiant 42 bowsprit, this one has a comfortable teak platform, tack block fitting for the asymmetrical, and provides for better sail separation with the cutter.  Check out the big slotted roller for the 73 lb. Rocna anchor.  While the bowsprit took countless hours of measuring, welding, grinding, hoisting, re-welding, regrinding, etc. it fits like it was molded to the hull.  The bobstay is 3/4”, and the tang provides the proper support for anchor snubber lines.  Just aft of the bow is the powerful Kemp Windlass.  It just doesn’t get any better!

Custom Sails:  Yea, Carol Hasse Sails, Main, Staysail, and Yankee, carefully thought-out to balance the boat, ease of handling, and controlled power in all conditions. Made in USA. Asymmetrical Spinnaker by Yager Sails, also made in USA. The sail covers are in fine shape.

Running Rigging: All was new with the mast, so it is in excellent shape. Boat also has running back stays that can be used offshore, in big waves, or if it gets too windy.

Engine:  Greg replies “Original Westerbeke 40-108 with +/- 1000 hrs on it. These engines are based on the Perkins 4-108, and extremely reliable. They are known to drip some oil, but they start and run well when you need them to. These are the engines used on the lifeboats of most American Merchant Vessels. It has a Paragon hydraulic transmission, and a Warner "V" drive. The shaft goes through a dripless seal. There are no issues with any of this. I change out the diapers from under the engine occasionally, and change the oil and zincs. That is about it. The cutlass bearing was changed a short while back, and the prop is a KIWI Prop, which feathers when sailing. I have the pitch set up for about 2700 RPM, for cruising at 1800-2100 rpm, at hull speed.”

Interior Style, Refer and Heat:  Herreshoff style, warm white and teak, with plenty of storage through-out the boat. Mast painted white in salon.  Large aft “owners” cabin, generous galley, setting for six or more, large head and v-berth. There are two refrigeration systems; an engine driven, water cooled Technautics, and a 12v air-cooled Adler Barber system.  There is a new Wallas 40dt forced air diesel heater, and the traditional Dickenson Propane Fireplace.  Most lighting is LED, and the Masthead Anchor/tri-color light is a Lopo light.

This boat deserves to go to someone that appreciates her, and uses her. She is not a beauty queen, (though she could be with $15k, or several months of elbow grease). But physically, she is strong, capable and ready to go.  Ad some solar panels, a modern charging system, clean up the propane system, update communications with a Iridium-Go, and take her around the world.

If you are looking for a "bullet-proof" Valiant 40, an affordable, great sailing, comfortable cruiser, that you can safely rely on in serious offshore conditions, this just may be your boat!
