The Irwin Competition 37 was one of the most successful performance cruising designs of the early-mid 1970s, regularly placing in the top positions in buoy and distance races in ports throughout the East and Gulf coasts and Great Lakes. Her generous cockpit, walkway and foredecks spaces combined with ultra-large volume interior spaces created a boat that was enjoyed by racing crews and cruising families alike. Geronimo has been owned by four Chicago area sailors, all of whom were serious, maintenance focused yachtsmen.

An interesting highlight of this Irwin 37 is she was purchased from her second owner in 1994 by a young Polish fellow, name of Richard Rewucki, who had escaped from occupied Poland to find his way to a new free life in the USA. A master’s degree in marine biology was his only experience even close to sailing yet he bought the boat, with more than half his life savings, in order to learn to sail and in less than a two year time window with the new name “Free Poland” participate in a sailing flotilla of Polish American sailors from New York to (the now free) Gdansk, Poland.
Not only did Richard accomplish this seemingly against all odds feat, as someone with such limited sailing experience, but he sailed the boat back to America and not long thereafter started out to complete a circumnavigation, which after several years he accomplished. The boat returned to Chicago some time later to meet its fourth owner.
The current owner Dick Gravengood has been a highly respected Chicago-area yacht rigger and full time sailing professional since the early 1970s. He purchased Geronimo in the fall of 2000 and raced her in the Chicago Mac Race annually til 2016. Dick has acquired another boat so it’s time to pass the torch to a new owner for Geronimo.
