Grand Banks Yachts began its journey in 1956 as American Marine, Ltd. Founder Robert J. Newton and his sons, John and Whit, were running a custom boatyard on Junk Bay in Hong Kong, building heavy sailboats and big motor yachts to designs by the world’s top marine architects – The Magellan series were designed by Allan Eldredge and Walter McInnis (Eldredge-McInnis). This series included the M35, M39 & M46.
Magellan ll Is hull #11 out of 13 built. This lovely, traditional yacht has teak decks, solid Philippine Mahogany planking, beautiful joiner work and craftmanship rarely found today. Hand rubbed Burmese teak used to create a beautiful interior. The M35 is a center cockpit model with the main living quarters forward and the privacy and comfort of an owner’s aft cabin.
Magellan ll sails well on all points and has a dependable diesel for those non-wind days.
From 2004-2008 the vessel went through a major restoration project. This dream began out of passion for restoring a classic, well-made yacht, to bring her back or better than what she was. The name plates are all hand carved and then inlaid with gold leaf to enhance the gold shine. ($5,000). All the sails replaced by Carol Hasse, bronze and copper everywhere, new electrical marine wiring, solar system, updated plumbing, custom engine gauges built in Chicago, teak decks all redone, exterior hull painted, custom davits, 5 pieces winter cover/summer shade, bronze pulpit & pushpit, stanchions and lifelines all bronze, bronze winches. Then a custom hard dodger was designed by Bill Garden to match the boat. This protected space has added an amazing living space to sail from or enjoy a beautiful outdoor evening meal while at anchor.
Magellan II is a beautiful classic sailboat that must be seen. For your personal viewing, give us a call and allow us to show you this gem!
