A Dark Harbor 17 is a pure sailing machine of great beauty; easily single-handed and offering comfort and safety with a small cuddy cabin and self-bailing cockpit. The lovely, slender shape, with long overhangs, deep draft and large rig provide wonderfully sweet “feel” in this powerful, fast, responsive and handy boat.
The round-front oak cabin trunk forms a cozy cabin that is just big enough for two narrow berths. Although headroom is minimal, the cockpit well will sleep two in fair comfort under a boom ten. Mostly the cuddy serves as storage space, shelter in a rain squall, and a bit of privacy if desired.
There are larger boats of similar character, but a “Seventeen” is probably the smallest design that offers such a fine and elegant sailing experience.
DASHAWAY has been well maintained over the years, and recently received a complete makeover that included stripping and refinishing all of her paint and varnish. The brightwork (including spars) received 10 coats of Epifanes varnish.
Her cockpit was removed to facilitate the replacement of sixteen frames, the interior was repainted, and an ingenious new teak clad footwell was installed with a hatch that can be raised for use as a table and upright seating.
DASHAWAY comes with a tandem axle trailer fitted with a cradle, Garman ECHOmap chart plotter, depth sounder, solar panel, and a transom mounted bronze outboard motor mount.
For daysailing, racing, and the occasional overnight, DASHAWAY would be the perfect vessel to spark a lifelong passion for classic yachting.
