The design of this modern Racer / Cruiser has been developed with the aim to combine exciting sailing
performance with the possibility of being used for short cruises. The hull lines, fin and rudder are the
result of numerous experiences in the field of optimization of racing boats. The design of the deck
is the result of research in terms of ergonomics for various uses, design and aerodynamics.
The project of Italia 9.98 was carried out in compliance with CE (cat. A / unlimited sailing) for
pleasure boats and complies with World Sailing special regulations.
The keel has a reverse “T” configuration with the blade and torpedo cast in lead with 3% antimony. The geometry has been designed using modern flow simulation software which allowed to obtain a very efficient wing despite a shallow draft.
The rudder blade is laminated with biaxial / unidirectional reinforcements and PVC core on female moulds. The rudder stock is made of anodized 6082 aluminum, CNC milled biconical wit
support blades. The stock bearings are self aligning. Steering is by way of a fiberglass tiller as a
standard. As an alternative to the fiberglass tiller, it is possible to install a twin wheel steering system
(wheels diameter 800 mm).
There is a large open cockpit with two benches, as an option it is possible to install two additional
removable benches with storage in order to transform the ergonomic racing cockpit into a perfect cruising one. There are two lockers, one especially dedicated to the liferaft and one for storage, sails and equipment.
HATCHES AND PORTLIGHTS
Apart from the very wide companionway there is a large hatch in the front part of the saloon and two
portlights, one in the bathroom and one in the aft cabin. The correct positioning and sizing ensure excellent ventilation and comfort when handling sails. On the sides of the coachroof, two large
plexiglass windows are integrated in order to obtain great interior brightness combined with a modern
and sleek design of the deck. Optionally, it is possible to add two portlights on the side windows located in the galley and at the chart table.
The deck is equipped with the following:
- n° 2 primary winches self tailing 2 speed
- n° 2 halyard winches self tailing 2 speed
- Mainsheet 2 speed purchase
- Mainsail ball bearing traveler
- Transverse jib tracks with up-down system
- Backstay 48: 1
- N° 6 stoppers
- Dyneema® ropes
- Stainless steel pulpits/pushpits and stanchions
- Blocks and other hardware
- n° 4 Mooring cleats
MAST AND RIGGING

- Two spreaders (21 deg.) aluminium mast and boom
- 9/10 fractional rig
- Discontinuous wire rigging (1 x 19 s/s) with
- Tuff luff forestay
- Dyneema® backstay with lifting batten
- Dyneema® halyards: jib, mainsail and spinnaker.
The interior layout of the Italia 9.98 consists of two cabins, one head and a big saloon including the galley and the navigation area. The modern design characterized by gelcoat surfaces is selected so that it can be functional in both racing and cruising situations. Some parts, such as closets and cabinets are made of fabric. The floor is made of marine plywood finished in anti-slip plastic laminate.
The front cabin is composed of a bed of 1.95 m in length and two shelves. A big storage space is
available under the bed.
The large saloon offers two comfortable benches that can be transformed into 2 single beds (1.95m). The table has 2 folding planes and can accommodate up to 6 people and its structure offers a useful handrail. When the table is in the folded position, the passage to the fwd cabin is wide open and allows sail stacking in racing mode. The long shelves installed above the seats complete the design and offer more storage space.
The “ L” galley consists of a sink with folding mixer tap, a generous 80 liter fridge, a gimballed stove with two burners, drawers and other storage compartments.
The chart table is placed in the saloon including a dedicated LED light and a storage compartment. The electrical control panel and any electronic device are placed laterally to the navigator.
The head includes a manual toilet with holding tank, a sink with mixer tap, shower and plenty of storage space. From the bathroom it is possible to access the large storage area connected to the stern locker.
The Italia 9.98 has a spacious aft cabin on the port side, separated from the saloon, with a double bed of 1.95 m in length and a big removable locker.
The yacht is equipped with an inboard diesel engine 20hp with sail-drive, placed in a compartment easily accessible and sound insulated. The propeller has two folding blades. The large diesel tank (60 liters) allows considerable autonomy.
Electrical and lighting
The control panel is located above the chart table. Two batteries are provided: 70Ah services battery and a 70Ah engine battery positioned below the saloon bench. Modern LED spotlights provide a warm atmosphere.
