The modern and dynamic lines reflect the true spirit of Amel. Designed for ocean voyages the AMEL 55 is extremely simple to manoeuvre but is also adapted to day cruises.


The Amel 55 is available in a Hardtop version fitted with a rigid steering shelter, including a sliding extension which covers the whole cockpit surface. Whatever the sailing conditions all sailors can enjoy being wrapped in comfort but with the benefit of extreme protection too.


The AMEL 55 can be fitted in a two-cabin version both with a large bed (one in the aft part and the other at the bow).





With over 3,000 yachts built over their 50yrs history, the Amel story is one of the most fascinating in yachting.


Amel is first and foremost the story of one man. The ‘Cap'taine’! Or rather Henri Tonet, his real name. Now recognised as an exceptional naval architect, he started out as a Parisian auto coach maker with a passion for naval construction. A strong-willed, ambitious man, ready to go all-out to fulfil his dreams, and who despite being partially blind for most of his life, continued to invent, develop and design his boats with the same enthusiasm.


Henri Amel was above all a man of sound judgement, whose simple, fundamental ideas are now considered as a prerequisite by many sailors. As an architect, he believed that the notions of quality, safety and comfort on board should address one objective: being able to navigate across all the world’s seas.


Henri Amel passed away on April 12th 2005 and his company is today both owned and run by its loyal and long-standing employees. With circa 120 shipwrights, technicians, managers and adminstrators centred around the 11,500sqm Amel shipyard in Périgny, La Rochelle, the shipyard now produces the ketch-rigged Amel 55 and 64 and in 2017 will launch the new Amel 50 sloop.


AMEL is a true French success story, as beautiful as it is rare. A business story bearing the imprint of true sailor’s courage, made of challenges and humility, of hard work and determination, of dreams to achieve. A story that has succeeded in bringing people together through their love for the ocean and long distance journeys.




RCD Status:

  • Our understanding is that the yacht is fully compliant with the European Union's Recreational Craft Directive (CE-marking) and is categorised A (unrestricted offshore).


Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • Hull made from composite, Roving 71 glass fibre + glass flakes against osmosis / isophthalic resin, monolithic laminate, laid up by hand (application / coating / air removal) in lengthwise and transverse layers with a two thirds overlap.
  • Frame structure in polyurethane omega-foam and plywood, laminated to the hull, as is all the joinery structure (bulkheads, furniture units, lockers, etc.)
  • This system guarantees the highest rigidity of the whole unit and optimises load spread. Compression forces from the masts / rigging are compensated by a structure of support pillars for the masts and chain plate tie-rods laminated to the hull for the rigging.
  • The bulkheads are glued and laminated with the deck. 4 of them are watertight bulkheads with isolation valves.
  • Composite Roving 71 glass fiber / isophtalic resin and balsa sandwich deck moulded by the same process as the hull (the deck is glued and laminated to the hull and the bulkheads).
  • The fore and aft bridge, foredeck and quarter deck are made from “Amel teak", moulded into the deck.
  • Self-bailing cockpit (2 scuppers, 100 mm diameter)


Keel & Rudder:

  • Cast iron ballast fixed to the hull / keel by stainless steel bolts, sealing by Epoxy treatment.
  • Monolithic laminate rudder with skeg made from plain composite, moulded in one piece with the hull.
  • The rudder is mounted at 3 points, the rudder trunk is laminated and the intermediate fitting and socket are stainless steel, bolted. Stainless steel rudder stock, 60 mm in diameter.




Engine & gearbox:

  • Volvo Penta D3-110 5-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine producing 110hp
  • Cockpit controls with electronic throttle and complete alarm system
  • Freshwater cooling system via raw water intake and heat exchanger
  • Water-cooled exhaust
  • Hydraulic gearbox with shaft brake and Amel angled transmission system
  • Engine hours - approx 100 as of October 2017

Sail Locker:

Forward Owner’s Cabin:

  • Closed by a watertight door. It covers the full width of the hull. It is vast, very light and well ventilated thanks to 3 deck hatches and 2 hull portlights. LED lighting by ceiling lights, reading lamps and indirect lighting.
  • Central 1.60m double bed, slat base and high density foam mattress. Very large storage space under the bed with top access.
  • Cabinets, drawers, and a large hanging locker for optimum ease of storage.
  • Desk unit/dressing table to starboard with swivelling seat, mirror and 220V sockets.


Forward Heads:

  • Spacious shower, teak floor board, sliding door, mixing tap. Shower bar, storage, lights.
  • Lighting by deck hatch and ceiling lights.

  • Situated to the left of the companionway, it is very large and is a major feature of the life on board. A large opening portlight gives a view of the outside whilst doing the cooking.
  • It is naturally very light, great attention has been paid to the lighting and ventilation which are excellent.
  • It comprises : - 2 large working surfaces made of moulded Corian with surround, 2-basin stainless steel sink with mixer tap and hand shower, a combination of low units, drawers and upper cabinets, a gimbal-mounted stove, electric extractor hood, microwave oven, fridge and freezers and several 220v sockets.


Navigation Station:

  • Access: from the cockpit, full opening of the cockpit bottom assisted by a gas strut.
  • 24V fans: 1 extractor + 1 blower for the engine compartment, 1 extractor for the battery compartment.
