OWNER’S COMMENTS:

 

GEM is the realisation of our dream to build a fast, simple, elegant performance cruising yacht with wonderful panoramic views, spaciousness and an easy walk-through flow.

 

As a professional boat builder and owner of one of New Zealand’s foremost composite yacht production yards, GEM was built by my team and launched on a sunny day in November 2012. Over the following summer she cruised New Zealand waters, exploring the Hauraki Gulf and enjoying a wonderful extended cruise along the Northland coast.

 

Late in 2013 she went offshore cruising. Over six months GEM logged 6,000nm and visited New Caledonia, Vanuatu and the East Coast of Australia.  Anchoring everywhere from beautiful bays, coral atolls, and up rivers, to an island with a live volcano, even right in the centre of cities such as Brisbane and Sydney.

 

The main ocean passages saw GEM regularly achieving over 200nm per day and consistently seeing speeds in excess of 12 knots with ease and 17.6 knots being the maximum seen on the log. GEM Is a joy to sail with her Jefa transmission steering system, balanced carbon rudder and a cockpit set up to utilise electric winches for sail handling.

 

One of the best features on board GEM is the flow from cockpit to saloon and on through the boat; just two very comfortable steps down and you are there. Galley duties are no hardship with the cook no longer hidden away down below. Instead they can be part of social activities, while creating culinary delights and enjoying a view that you just don’t get on a conventional yacht.

 

Another superb feature is the functional cockpit layout, offering full visibility from either of the twin wheels over the cabin top which is not present in many (if any) other Tourers or yachts with the raised cabin top. For those that want to get into more serious racing, the cockpit table is removable.

 

GEM has a spacious four-cabin layout. The master cabin is forward. The bunk in the master cabin has a gas-assisted lifting top to reveal enormous storage under the bunk. There are bookshelves on both sides, drawers plus a cupboard with shelves to port and another set of drawers and a hanging locker to starboard.

 

The starboard forward cabin has a double and a single berth with plenty of drawer storage and a hanging locker.  Also forward, and to port, is the bathroom with a Sealand Masterflush electric toilet, separate shower and 6kg Fisher & Paykel washing machine.

 

With offshore work in mind, the galley is user friendly at sea with the island bench to brace against, an athwartships fridge, so you can always get what you want regardless of which way the boat is heeling, and a top-loading freezer to keep the cold in while you get the next meal out.  There is plenty of storage available under and behind the saloon seating, along with shelving behind the island bench.

 

Entertaining is so easy with the spacious galley and island bench. There is plenty of space for working and serving up, and a great flow from galley to outside table, so if it’s a big team you can have indoor and outdoor dining running at the same time!  The outside table seats six and the indoor table can also seat up to eight with the clever custom-designed swivel seats.

 

GEM’s cockpit layout gives an added advantage to the interior with increased volume in both the aft cabins over other Tourer models.   The starboard aft cabin is a twin-berth guest cabin (again 1 single and 1 double), with plenty of drawer and under-berth storage. The port aft cabin has a large single berth which has a drop-in panel to turn it into a double.  At the forward end of this cabin is the second head with manual toilet and hand basin.

 

In building GEM top-quality equipment and materials were used throughout. LG (Hi-Macs) solid-surface benches were fitted in the galley and the six-mm solid teak and ash floor was selected for its hard-wearing good looks. Throughout there is custom stainless steel work with fully polished-out welds and Grohe/Methven tapware.

 

Outside, the focus has been on keeping the deck clean and uncluttered.  The two primary electric winches are placed so that they can be used to hoist the mainsail and furl the headsail making sail handling a breeze.  There is a very large forepeak for sail storage which also takes the rolled up tender and outboard which keeps the decks clear when undertaking passages. A reasonable size lazarette provides further underdeck storage plus access to the Jefa transmission steering system.

 

DESIGNER’S COMMENTS:

 

The Elliott Tourer series is a range of semi production, ocean going, Pilothouse Cruising Yachts. A formula that gives true performance with all cruising amenities. The added attraction of the pilothouse configuration, not only gives protection from the elements, but also a voluminous, lounging area. The Tourer series has been designed to take full advantage of this by integrating the cockpit and pilothouse on a similar level, creating a natural indoor – outdoor flow and delivers a stunning 360-degree view outside whilst seated inside the saloon.  

 

Elliott 1550 Tourer is an exciting production model in the Elliott Tourer series. The E1550 is a luxurious, performance, offshore cruising yacht.  Essential influences in the design were safety, comfort and the necessity for smooth easy handling by one or two people, high stability and offshore performance usually associated with racing yachts.

 

The hull is a well-balanced form both upright and heeled with optimized sections to reduce wetted surface. Highly efficient keel and rudder foils are optimized to ensure correct amount of lift with low drag.  A moderate sized fractional rig with double swept spreaders and top mast backstay provides superior balance even whilst reefed. The efficient uncluttered deck and spacious cockpit allow easy handling from the cockpit for one or two people.

 

MANUFACTURER’S HISTORY:

 

Aquamagic Yachts are an Auckland based boat builder and repair/refit specialist and marine project management/consultant company offering project management of new builds and refits, of any size or scope; solutions to technical marine problems; interior layout, detailing and design.

 

Aquamagic Yachts were Emirates Team New Zealand's project manager for the build of their 2017 America's Cup AC50 race yacht.

 

CONSTRUCTION

 

RCD Status:

  • GEM is not presently compliant with the EU’S Recreational Craft Directive, but CE Certification can be arranged subject to negotiation.

 

Hull Construction:

  • Hull built on male mould, entirely of multiaxial and unidirectional E – Glass fibres with localised carbon unidirectional reinforcements. 
  • Adhesive Technologies ADR 246/341 epoxy resin systems were used with 25 mm thick Corecell PVC cores of different densities.
  • Cured under vacuum and heat to give a high strength custom built structure
  • The adhesion of the sandwich ensured by application of the vacuum bag and the post-curing at controlled temperatures ensure the structural integrity and stability of the laminate.
  • A massive longitudinal and transverse reinforcement structure provide excessive strength for rig and keel loads.
  • Carbon reinforcements along all the longitudinal and transverse members
  • The bulkheads are all laminated into the hull structure.
  • The bulkheads are all made of BS1088 marine plywood, fully glassed over to High Modulus NZ engineered specifications
  • Watertight bulkheads forward and aft.
  • Hull spray painted in metallic red Dupont paint system
  • 3 hull windows in each side of hull with high-thickness toughened glass.

 

Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • Same as hull construction, but with 20mm thick sandwich Corecell PVC of various densities.
  • Reinforcements in way of through deck fittings.
  • Carbon fibre reinforcement in the mast foot area.
  • Hull to deck join is a fully glassed and engineered structure, no bolts or alloy toerails to leak.
  • Exposed deck and superstructure areas spray painted in white finish.

 

Keel & Rudder:

  • Steel fabricated keel with lead bulb, attached to hull with stainless steel bolts.
  • Keel blade is sand-blasted and epoxy coated, faired and glassed over.
  • 3,600kgs bulb on 600kg fin.
  • Balanced carbon fibre rudder
  • Carbon rudder stock with upper and lower rudder bearings with self-aligning rollers.
