A Brief History by previous owner....

"The story of how I got to know this boat: This is a boat that snuck up and bit me. Back in 2001 while working for West Coast Yacht, who had recently been awarded the Nautor Swan dealership, I was assisting a client to purchase a boat. A Norwegian, now living in Tacoma, this man had an affinity for Scandinaviaun yachts. Hallberg-Rassy, Najad, and other manufacturers were considered. Listed with the veteran Seattle Swan brokerage, McKee & Mooney, was a 1989 Swan 36 moored at Elliot Bay Marina. Our visit revealed a boat in need of some serious cleaning.

The current owner, Stimson Bullitt, a well known Seattle businessman, had purchased the boat in the Mediterranean and then sailed across the Atlantic to Florida and then trucked her to Seattle. In Seattle, the boat was largely unused. Her running rigging was green with mold. Discarded by gulls, clam shells covered the deck. The interior was a jumble of rusty cans and offshore gear left over from the crossing. Beneath the dirt and mold we saw an impressively designed and constructed yacht. After estimating the costs involved with bringing the boat back to “Swan” condition, my customer made an offer which was accepted.

While an annual Norway vacation took my customer away, I was tasked with getting the boat surveyed and sea-trialed. The survey revealed no significant issues. As I emptied locker after locker of boat stuff and inspected nook and cranny, my appreciation for the construction quality of this boat grew and grew. Cost was not an issue when Swan built this boat. Almost all hardware was constructed “in-house” to a level of fit and finish unavailable with “off the shelf” hardware. I had witnessed the machine shop, joinery shop, and other Nautor-Swan facilities only months before on a trip to Finland. After survey, Henry Hellisen, the listing agent, and I went sailing. To say “the feel and performance of this boat is intoxicating,” is an understatement. The helm is a perfect meld of strength and response; directionally stable and balanced, yet nimble. I was floored by how comfortable and fun it was to sail this boat. With survey in hand, I reported the findings to my customer who was still in Norway. After contemplating the “clean-up” project, he decided not to purchase the boat. Someone needed to buy the boat, clean it up and restore it to its original splendor. Since I worked for the Swan dealer, perhaps it made sense for me to own a Swan. And this was probably the most affordable one I would ever find. Justified and smitten I offered to purchase the boat for a relatively low price and was surprised when Mr. Bullitt accepted. So began my year-long project with Swan 36 hull number 103, renamed “Gosling.” Unfortunately my son, our first child, was born the day before we closed the boat. My wife was not thrilled about the time I was to spend working on the boat. Paul Ziegler of NW Fiberglass compounded and buffed the hull and all other glossy gelcoated surfaces, painted the aluminum steering pedestal and winch bases, and lightly sanded the teak decks. I emptied and cleaned all lockers and spaces. We removed all running rigging and ran it through multiple wash cycles in an industrial machine to remove the mold. I replaced the smoked acrylic wrap-around ports and hatch lenses. I removed the cabin sole boards to my basement, stripped and applied eight coats of varnish as fumes wafted upstairs. Diesel heater, engine, sailing instruments, and autopilot were serviced. Canvas Supply Company reupholstered all interior soft goods, covered the steering wheel in elk-hide, and constructed a new dodger. All sanitary hoses were replaced. After six months of work, we moved her back out to Elliott Bay; in a gleaming state, returned to a proud condition. With the financial considerations of my larger family and the realities of work, I placed “Gosling” up for sale. In the spring of 2003, “Gosling” was sold to a Bay Area sailor, who was moving up from a Sabre 34. After cruising Puget Sound for the summer, I prepared the boat for shipment and Dudley Trucking transported her to Richmond, CA where the local Swan dealer commissioned her. For five years, she was sailed and well-maintained in San Francisco. I kept in touch with the very happy and enthusiastic owner. In the spring of 2008, a prior customer of Swiftsure Yachts contacted us. He was looking for a Swan 36 and had just returned from New England where he had been disappointed by the condition of a Swan 36 for sale there. This customer knew quality and had always kept his boats in top condition. Prior boats had included a Mason 44, Taswell 43, and most recently and Offshore 54 power yacht. Returning to sail but now looking for a smaller performance cruiser, he determined the Swan 36 to be the highest quality, mid-thirty foot performance cruiser every built. A call to the San Francisco owner of “Gosling” determined he was willing to sell as he was now ready for larger boat. Two days later, “Gosling” was inspected and immediately sold to her current owner who had her trucked back up to Seattle. Renamed “Breeza,” and sporting new North 3DL sails, new running rigging, and new electronics she looks fantastic.
