Originally dubbed the Bristol 39, the design after several minor changes later became the Bristol 40. The Bristol 40 is a classic racer/cruiser that has proven successful in the company of other classics such as the Block Island and Bermuda 40.
This Ted Hood design offers classic lines, full keel for easy handling and straight tracking, warm wood interiors and much more. Bristol craftsmen, knowledgeable of both glass and wood boat construction, were able to combine the finest features of each in the Bristol 40. Result: a practical comfortable racer-cruiser with all the refinements of modern design and the extra values that make this boat a classic after 32 years. "Brilliant" was recently re-powered with a 50hp Yanmar diesel (2007) along with a set of new Hood sails.

Varnished mahogany interior with teak and holly sole throughout. The Vee berth is forward and there is an overhead deck hatch. A door between the v-berth and main salon and between the v-berth and head provide privacy. Next aft is the salon with port and starboard settees and a bulkhead mounted drop-down dinette table. Brilliant sleeps 5 comfortably with a traditional v-berth which has a center fill-in cushion to create one large double berth,the port salon settee pulls out to a double berth, and there is a single quarterberth to port. There is enclosed storage cabinetry behind the salon settees, port and starboard of the v-berth, and the port side of the quarterberth. There are also two hanging lockers to starboard and accessible storage space under the settees. The galley is located aft on starboard with the navigation station and quarterberth to port. From the salon steps lead up to the cockpit with wheel steering and engine controls.
There are four large, four medium sized fixed ports and two opening ports, two hatches, and two dorade vents which keep the cabin light and airy.
The galley includes: A stainless steel single sink, a Force Ten gimballed 3-burner LPG stove/oven, and a large icebox. The head includes: a vanity with stainless steel sink and six built-in drawers above, hand held shower head and circular shower curtain rod; separate sump pump, and Manual Groco toilet with access to y-valve and plumbing behind and enclosed storage above.
The large cockpit provides room and comfort while underway and while entertaining at anchor. Cockpit seats are almost 7' long with storage below, cockpit cushions (tan), mainsheet traveler runs forward of and above the companionway. Edson pedestal steering with emergency tiller. Pedestal includes compass and teak cockpit table. All sheetlines are accessible from the cockpit. There is a magma propane grill mounted on stern rail.
