This is a great opportunity to own a Valiant 40 at an affordable price. This Valiant 40, Grebe, is one of two that I know of that have tiller steering and boom end sheeting. She has a completely rebuilt Perkins 4-107 40 hp engine, stainless steel arch, solar panels, Wavestopper hard dodger, Aires windvane steering system, Simrad plotter, Raytheon radar, and electric autopilot. She’s had a complete rigging inspection and now has a new mast step, new chain plates and new masthead sheaves. The white hull is pretty and practical as well! She has new bottom paint and she’s ready to go.
The Valiant 40 lives up to its reputation earned over 35 years! As the first “Performance Cruiser" the Valiant 40 was pretty radical in the 1970s. Nowadays Bob Perry’s long fin “cruising” keel and skeg hung rudder has become the definition of a stable fast ocean going sailboat! The Valiant 40 designed 35 years ago still provides something cruising boats just didn't have; the ability to sail fast and while she sails fast, she also sails safe. She is robust, rugged, solid, safe, capable cruising vessel that is also affordable!
Today the Valiant 40 remains one of the very best ocean sailing vessels you can buy and at a great price. This is an ocean sailing vessel that is incredibly built, with virtually no weaknesses in the build or the design. Proven over and over, tough and hardly, the Valiant remains a couples cruising vessel of choice as well as a favorite for solo sailors. She is your “all ocean SUV" of the sailing world. No frills. All function!
There is a reason that serious sailors choose a Valiant. The build quality is among the best there is. From the hand laid solid glass hull, to the hull deck joint is bolted and glued with 5200. The deck is built of a sandwich of fiberglass over marine ply coring with deck hardware is attached securely with robust backing plates. This Valiant 40 was built BEFORE the blister years!
Regarding the Valiant blister years, here is an excerpt from Mark Schrader’s review of the Valiant 40 in Cruising World 2002. Of course Mark made the Valiant famous with his success in the BOC round the world race of the early 80’s. He chose a Valiant 40 based on the impressive track records of several earlier Valiant successes in the OSTAR transatlantic races.
“Uniflite built 159 Valiant 40s from 1975 to 1984, when Rich Worstell, a Valiant owner and dealer, bought the molds. After producing some 40s in Washington, he eventually moved the operation to Texas. The first "Texas" Valiant 40 was hull number 267. Sometime during the Uniflite operation, between hull numbers 120 and 249, resin mixtures were changed to include a fire-retardant additive. Although conclusive proof was never established, there was a high correlation between the fire-retardant additive and the blisters that later developed on boats between those hull numbers. Blisters developed on most (but not all) of the boats produced between 1976 and 1981. Lots of those "blister" boats are out there with happy owners. Blistered boats represent great dollar value, but may also require costly repairs.”

Having owned and sailed a Valiant 40, we can safely say we love the boat. Grebe is a good boat, she is not new, but you can have a serious ocean going sailboat for not a lot of money! You can also buy the slip lease in Santa Barbara CA! Or better yet, just sail away!

The Valiant 40 is a blue water boat designed with two staterooms, one head, huge galley, comfortable salon, and loads of storage and wonderful access to all systems Grebe is the original Bob Perry layout that also had a small pilot berth outboard of the settee on the port side of the main salon.
Starting forward the chain locker is in the bow with the V stateroom. This is a traditional V berth that provides two comfortable berths. There is a filler cushion to create a wide double berth. Shelves outboard port and starboard provide stowage as well as storage underneath the berth. There is a hanging locker to starboard and the enclosed head is to port with a NEW nature head that is amazing! No smell what so ever. There is a shower faucet and curtain as well as pressure hot and cold water. The head is large with a vanity and sink as well as loads of storage outboard.
The main salon just aft of the bulkhead is classic and traditional with a solid centerline drop leaf table with liquor storage in the center and straight settees to port and starboard. The area outboard the settees is open creating good storage for various gear as well as for books.
The Nav station is aft to starboard adjacent the galley. The nav station is a classic, large sit down forward facing Nav station with a chart table with storage outboard and below.
Opposite on the port side is the famous Valiant Bob Perry galley with ample counter space and good stowage. Just aft of the bulkhead is the aft stateroom with large double berth is to port with a hanging locker, drawers and a dressing seat. It is a great cabin that offers a wonderful sea berth on a passage. Aft of the nav station on starboard are at the companionway are three large hanging lockers. The companionway stairs are removable for access to the large engine room. The interior is solid teak which is no longer available. Standard "Proven" Valiant 40 layout
The famous Valiant U-shaped galley to port has a double stainless steel sink and mixing faucet, large Formica countertops with drawer/locker storage under counter, and cabinets above. There is a new gimbaled 3-burner propane stove/oven. The counter opposite the sink houses a large ice box with 12 volt refrigerator and separate freezer with 12v refrigeration. It is a famous galley!

Grebe has a rebuilt Perkins Westerbeke 4-107 40hp engine with about 1600 hours due to light use. The engine was rebuilt by Ventura Harbor Boatyard in 2016. The rebuild consisted of pretty much everything from the main bearings, rod bearings, pistons, liners, rings, valves, injectors, gaskets, oil pump, water pump, and $2100 in labor! The engine was removed completely for the rebuild and of course new motor mounts were installed. It’s great. Nice that the Valiant 40 is simply the best engine access you can hope for. It is a breeze to work on with easy access to maintain the engine.
Navigation & Communications
New electronics, forward facing sit down nav station.
The Valiant is a proven offshore vessel with a true cutter rig with keel stepped mast. Recent rigging inspection and new chain plates. The cutter rig provides a divided sail plan so that the sails are smaller and easily manages. The mainsail has boom sheeting to the traveler aft in the cockpit. . Headsail has Furlex Roller Furler. and all lines are led to the cockpit for easy single handed sailing.
Hull, Deck, & Ground Tackle
Everything on a Valiant is seriously overbuilt and Grebe has been lightly used and upgraded and restored several times in her lifetime. Grebe’s robust hull was laid up by Uniflight in 1975, prior to the blister years! The hand laid solid fiberglass hull is more substantial the most modern boats floating. Grebe was grounded on sand a couple of years ago (2015) after dragging anchor in the Channel Islands. She was completely inspected and the fiberglass repaired from the scratches were repaired by Ventura Harbor Boatyard. As a result she has been inspected completely from stem to stern and mast head to rudder. Any fiberglass damage found was repaired and at the same time other items were replaced or repaired just because. Of course she got all waxed and bluffed and new bottom paint also. Receipts are available. There are plenty of Valiant 40s that have gone three times around the world giving their owners a comfortable ride as one of the world's best sailing boats!
